Dr. James Wittig Nobility in Science Award SFA
Sarcoma Foundation of America to Present Dr. James Wittig with the Nobility in Science Award on May 3, 2018

Dr. James C. Wittig, Vice Chairman Orthopedic Surgery; Chief of Orthopedic Oncology (Pediatric and Adult) and Director, Skin & Sarcoma Division of the John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, NJ, has been named as the 2018 recipient of the Sarcoma Foundation of America's Nobility in Science Award.

The Sarcoma Foundation of America (SFA) is an advocate for increased research to find new and better therapies with which to treat patients with sarcoma. The organization raises money to privately fund grants for sarcoma researchers and conducts education and advocacy efforts on behalf of sarcoma patients.

Sarcoma is a rare cancer in adults (1 percent of all adult cancers) but rather prevalent in children (about 20 percent of all childhood cancers). At any one time, 50,000 patients and their families are struggling with sarcoma. Every year, nearly 15,000 new cases are diagnosed and about 6,000 people die from the disease

Dr. Wittig is being honored for decades of work including an active subspecialty clinical practice that focuses on treating pediatric and adult patients with bone and soft tissue sarcomas, as well as benign bone and soft tissue tumors and metastatic cancers.

Dr. Wittig also has extensive experience in limb sparing surgery, has authored numerous articles and books including treatment for sarcoma, and continues to lead and contribute to ongoing research in the field.

He will be recognized for his contributions to sarcoma cancer research, treatment, education, and advocacy during a ceremony at the SFA's 16th Annual fundraising event, Stand Up to Sarcoma, on Thursday, May 3, 2018, at Guastavino's restaurant in Manhattan.

The Nobility in Science Award is given to an outstanding scientist who is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge of sarcoma and works tirelessly to find new and innovative approaches for treating the rare cancer. Dr. Wittig's passion for addressing the unique challenges of sarcoma has made an extraordinary difference in the field, and in the lives of patients and their families.

"Our Foundation applauds the work of Dr. Wittig and his team, which aligns perfectly with our mission to find a cure for sarcoma," said Richard Rumsey, Chief Executive Officer, SFA. "Dr. Wittig's shared commitment to the highest quality research, in addition to the compassion he brings to patients and their families during their treatment, is a rare combination inspiring so many to continue to take on the fight to end this rare disease."

Dr. Wittig said, "Significant advancements can only be made through future scientific investigations and technological advances. I only hope that by receiving this award, I can continue to drive awareness and philanthropy to help develop new treatments, improve patients' quality of life and effect a cure."

Stand up to Sarcoma honors those who have battled sarcoma, as well as those who have dedicated their lives and careers to the treatment of sarcoma patients. The event raises money to fund innovative sarcoma research leading to the development of new and better therapies for sarcoma patients.
